The inaugural Overwatch League season will come to its conclusion at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, the organisers have revealed.
The Overwatch League Grand Finals will get underway on Friday, 27 July and end on Saturday, 28 July. The quarter-finals and semi-finals are taking place at Los Angeles’ Blizzard Arena, which has played host for the entirety of the campaign, before the Overwatch League heads to New York’s 19,000-capacity stadium.
The Barclays Arena has a history of holding esports events. ESL One has previously held its CS:GO tournaments at the venue.
The Grand Finals will take place over two days. This will consist of three best-of-five series, one of which will be held on Friday 27. The two following series will take place on Saturday 28, with the Overwatch League crown handed to the team that takes two of these series.
The winner of the Overwatch League Grand Finals will take home the lion’s share of the league’s $1.4 million prize pool.
Overwatch League commissioner Nate Nazer said:
“The Overwatch League Grand Finals will be an epic experience for fans and viewers.”
“We want this to be the pinnacle of esports, and holding it at a world-class venue like Barclays Center, in a global capital like New York, will help us celebrate not only the league’s two best teams, but the fans, partners, and players who have joined us on this incredible journey.”
Brett Yormark, CEO of Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment, said:
“This past year, the Overwatch League became the breakout league in the sports industry, and we anticipate drawing a dynamic international audience to experience the event live in July.”
“We are thrilled to host the inaugural Overwatch League Grand Finals, as we are quickly becoming a marquee destination for global esports leagues.”
Two day tickets, granting access to both Friday and Saturday’s games, will go on sale on Friday, 18 May at 3pm BST.
Who will make it to the Overwatch League Grand Finals?
Six teams will qualify for the Overwatch League playoffs. The top-placed team from each division will qualify directly for the semi-finals, while four other teams will play for the remaining two semi-final spots.
Judging by how each of the first three stages have gone, it seems highly likely that those attending the final in New York will be able to cheer on their home side.
New York Excelsior have made all three off the Overwatch League stage finals so far. They defeated Boston Uprising in Sunday’s Stage 3 final to retain the champions title that the won in Stage 2.
