London Spitfire has announced major changes to its roster just days after Stage 4 of the inaugural Overwatch League season kicked off.
Hyeon-woo “HaGoPeun” Jo, Jang-hyeon “TiZi” Hwang, Seung-hyun “WooHyaL” Seong and Dong-eun “Hooreg” Lee have officially been moved to the inactive list.
The team that took the Stage 1 title has had an 11 man roster for the majority of the season.
It isn’t uncommon for teams to have more players than they need in order to make changes between maps. However, London Spitfire has moved to reduce its ranks.
The four players will remain on the roster for the remainder of the season. However, while on the inactive list they are available for other rosters to approach and sign at any point.
London Spitfire’s goal is to focus on and develop a smaller roster in order to get better results in the current stage.
A statement on the London Spitfire website explained the organisation’s decision:
“These four players have been a pleasure to work with and we have no doubt that they will find the playing time they deserve on other Overwatch League teams in the future.”
How has the Overwatch League community reacted?
The community has had mixed reactions to the announcement.
The issue has been discussed on a Reddit thread. Susie Kim, general manager of the team, who gave fan an insight into the thoughts behind the decision.
According to Kim’s comment, it wasn’t an easy decision for the organisation to make. London Spitfire staff discussed the change for a long time before reaching a final decision.
The players are not “bench material” according to Kim and she assured the fans that these players would find a new home soon.
By keeping the players in the inactive list, London Spitfire provides them with financial security while they make the change.
With a now reduced roster, London Spitfire can focus on Stage 4, with hopes of reaching the grand finals.
The Overwatch League grand finals will be played in the Barclays Center in New York City, starting on Friday, 27 July.
