The Overwatch League has its first champion after London Spitfire swept aside Philadelphia Fusion to lift the Overwatch League trophy.
Philadelphia Fusion earned their place in the Grand Finals with an incredible victory over New York Excelsior that few predicted. However, overcoming the Spitfire proved an ask too big at the Barclays Center in New York on Saturday.
London Spitfire produced a clean sweep to claim the trophy. Their victory on Friday meant that they needed just one set to put a comeback out of reach for Philadelphia Fusion. They recorded a 3-0 sweep in the second match to put the tie to bed, clinching the $1m prize and the honour that comes with it.
Speaking following the victory, Spitfire support Seung-Tae “Bdosin” Choi said, “I didn’t think it would be this easy,” before adding, “Next year I hope we play against a stronger team.”
Spitfire DPS Jun-Young “Profit” Park was handed the Overwatch League MVP award following his team’s victory on Saturday.
While a great night for London Spitfire, it was a disappointing one for hip hop artist DJ Khaled. The record producer opened Saturday’s event with a set. However, despite his best efforts, he was unable to get his audiences’ hands in the air. Luckily, London and Philadelphia managed to put on a better show.
London Spitfire vs Philadelphia Fusion: As it happened
Spitfire dominated from the very beginning. On Junkertown, the opening map, they recorded 53 eliminations, just short of a kill/death ratio of 2:1 across the team. It was a fantastic team effort led by Jae-hee “Gesture” Hong, who showed his ability with Orisa.
They came out just as strong in the second map, Lijiang Tower. Fusion’s star man Jae-hyeok “Carpe” Lee was unable to find his rhythm and, ultimately, London were able to breeze to a 2-0 lead.
The third map was King’s Row. Fusion finally managed to give the Spitfire a game in this one. They showed their quality to push the map to overtime on two occasions. However, Spitfire were able to halt Fusion in the street phase, effectively ending all hope of a late comeback. London went on the attack and were able to ease to a 3-0 victory.
