When the Overwatch League was first announced, organisers Blizzard confirmed that, as part of the Overwatch League Player Agreement, organisations taking part in the inaugural season would have to pay their players a minimum of $50,000 a year.
However, many of Overwatch’s best players are earning considerably more than that amount.
Much was made of NRG Esports handing Jay “Sinatraa” Won a $150,000 annual contract to play for San Francisco Shock. That was the result of a bidding war between NRG and Cloud9, owners of London Spitfire. The two teams had no idea whether Overwatch League would take off or whether they would ever see a return on their hefty investments.
Yet, with the first season almost complete, Sinatraa’s $150,000 contact doesn’t seem all that excessive. In fact, many of his fellow Overwatch League professions are being paid similar sums to compete in the competition.
As well as the minimum wage, organisations must also offer health insurance, a retirement plan, housing and a practice space.
Overwatch League salary: The average wage of an OWL team
It’s impossible to say exactly how much the average Overwatch League player is paid. Blizzard doesn’t release contract details for the players signed to their league.
However, Daily Esports claims to have obtained figures for most of the Korean players that participated in the inaugural Overwatch League season. According to the publication, an OWL official confirmed that the average Overwatch League salary sits somewhere between $80,000 and $120,000.
According to former Dallas Fuel player Félix “xQc” Lengyel, who was kicked out of the league following a number of controversial incidents, there is great disparity between the league’s top earners and the rest. The streamer claims that most players earn closer to the $50,000 minimum. Only a select few are earning $150,000 or more.
Who’s the highest paid player in the Overwatch League?
xQc also claims that Sinatraa isn’t, in fact, the highest paid player in the Overwatch League.
It is widely believed that one of the South Koreans in the league is paid more than $150,000.
That may have been confirmed in a stream by Overwatch player Jung-min “Mirage” Bae, during which Philadelphia Fusion’s Jae-hyeok “Carpe” Lee was present. During the stream it was hinted that Carpe’s current contract might be worth $180,000 a year. If true, this would make him the highest paid player in competitive Overwatch.
