After conquering the League of Legends scene, the prolific SKT T1 organisation is set to begin competing in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds esports competitions.
SK Telecom T1 are the most successful team in League of Legends history. Despite missing out on the LoL World Championship title last year, they won the title in 2013, 2015 and 2016.
Despite the organisation’s success, they have made few attempts to branch out. Their original StarCraft team was dropped in 2016 and their current LoL roster remains the only team on their books.
However, according to reports, that will have changed by August this year.
Korean gaming website FOMOS claims that SKT T1 has already started its search for players and expects to have formed a team by the summer.
The news won’t come as a surprise to SKT T1 fans. The organisation’s CEO Oh Kyung-sik revealed back in May 2017 that they were on the hunt for a new title to compete in after disbanding their StarCraft team.
If the PUBG roster proves to be half as successful as their LoL team, SKT T1 is in for a very good year.
The rise of PUBG
SK Telecom T1’s choice of title will surprise few.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds continues to make huge strides in esports following what was a record-breaking 2017.
The popular battle royale title was the most purchased game of last year on PC gaming marketplace Steam.
It recently became the first game on Steam to record 3m concurrent users. With 27.5m players and rising, 2018 is expected to be a big year for PUBG.
While no major PUBG tournaments have yet to be confirmed, esports organisations are betting big on the increasingly popular title. Korean organisations Lunatic-Hai and KSV eSports are also putting teams together to compete in future tournaments.
SKT T1 will be hopeful that they can make an impact on PUBG esports by getting involved early on.
