Twitch’s most followed streamer, Tyler “Ninja” Blevins and Cloud9’s Jacob “Hysteria” Reiser have won the eighth KEEMSTAR Friday Fortnite celebrity tournament.
The grand finals pitted the two former Halo teammates against FaZe Clan duo Turner “Tfue” Tenney and Dennis “Cloak” Lepore, who were defending their crown here. Ninja and Hysteria had to battle their way through the losing bracket, making FaZe favourites to claim back-to-back wins. However, their opposition proved too powerful to overcome.
The two Fortnite pros have taken home a $10,000 share of the total $20,000 prize pool. Despite finishing in the top ten on multiple occasions, this is the first time that Ninja, competitive Fortnite’s biggest star, has won the KEEMSTAR Fortnite Friday tournament.
A winning run
In the losing bracket, Ninja and Hysteria needed two wins to make it to the final, while FaZe only needed to win one. However, fatigue was little issue for Ninja, who recorded 15 kills to carry his side to victory.
FaZe took a one kill lead in the first game. However, Ninja and Hysteria got the upper-hand in game two. They recorded a 42-32 lead to take the tie to a final winner takes all game. With both FaZe players falling to early deaths, Ninja and Hysteria were able to storm to an easy victory.
This is the first time that Tfue and Cloak have lost in a Fortnite Friday grand final. The duo have made it this far on three other occasions and had previously maintained a 3/3 record. However, Ninja and Hysteria have inflicted a first defeat on the duo.
FaZe received $7,000 for their second-place finish. Likewise, Sypher “SypherPK” Ali and Brendan “Jaomock” O’Brien took the remaining $3,000 for placing third.
More people have been tuning in to watch the Fortnite Friday tournaments than new episodes of the popular horror series The Walking Dead. With Epic set to invest $100m in Fortnite esports over the next 12 months, Fortnite is set to see prize pools and viewership boom in the coming year.
