The LCK will return to action after a week-long break, getting underway with a match between Griffin and the Afreeca Freecs.
Griffin won a place in the LCK after finishing the Challengers Korea Spring Season with a perfect record. Since the beginning of the Summer Split, Griffin have produced strong results and emerged as the favourites to win the split.
The real challenge for Griffin came in week three when they faced King-Zone DragonX and Kt Rolster. However, the spring champions were unable to take down the rookies and Griffin finished the match with a clean 2-0.
After such a dominant result, analysts started to believe that Griffin could produce a result against Kt Rolster. However, to everyone’s surprise, the rookies suffered their first defeat of 2018.
Griffin vs Afreeca Freecs
Afreeca Freecs represents the final test for Griffin. Historically, Afreeca is a team with outstanding players, but are destined to finish fifth in the scoreboard.
After a remarkable Spring Split, Afreeca is now the team to beat.
Key player
The 2018 Summer Split is the war of the mid-laners, with the old guard going up against the newcomers in an attempt to prove that they’re still the best that Korea has to offer.
All eyes are on the rookie mid-laner, Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon.
This young player started his professional career in March 2018 at the age of 17. Despite his young age, Chovy held his grounds against the likes of Gwak “Bdd” Bo-seong and Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok. Now he must face Lee “Kuro” Seo-haeng in a match that will decide which team finishes week four in first place.
Road to the World Championship
Summer is the most important split for the League of Legends professionals. The winners get a direct pass to the World Championship, which is taking place in South Korea this year.
At this point of the regular season, Griffin look odds on for the first seed.
Griffin could go down in history as one of the few teams to make it to Worlds in their first attempt.
